Ernst Schering Foundation Doctoral Fellowships
Description
The Ernst Schering Foundation supports outstanding young scientists who conduct basic research in biology, medicine or chemistry (including related interdisciplinary fields of research). Every year, it awards a total of approximately 7 fellowships to doctoral students who want to carry out research projects at prestigious institutes either at home or abroad. By awarding the fellowships, the Ernst Schering Foundation acknowledges the past accomplishments of the young scientists and supports them in their future careers.
The fellowships are awarded for a two-year period. In exceptional cases, the fellowship can be extended for up to one year.

Eligibility
- The applicant graduated with excellent grades.
- The degree must have been completed no longer than two years before the time of application.
- The dissertation work will focus on topics in basic research in biology, medicine or organic chemistry (or any overlapping or neighboring disciplines such as biophysics and bioinformatics).
- The applicant should not yet have started his/her research project at time of application.

- Material costs allowance: EUR 100 (for travel costs, books, ect.)
- Entitled to a conference allowance of up to EUR 1.000 (to cover travel costs and registration fees)
- Monthly child supplement, per child: EUR 150

- Description of research project, including timetable (no more than ten pages including references)
- Curriculum vitae
- Letters of recommendation from the previous research director/adviser and the doctoral adviser in a sealed envelope (including the copy)
- If the doctoral advisor has also supervised the applicant´s previous work, an additional reader´s report must be obtained from a university teacher or somebody in a comparable position.
- In exceptional cases, letters of recommendation can be sent directly to the Ernst Schering Foundation, where they will be collated with the application.
- The letter of recommendation has to be signed and must be written on the official letterhead of the author´s institute.
- Short explanation of choice of host laboratory or institute, including information that it provides the necessary facilities and resources for conducting the lab work (scientific reputation, lab equipment)
- Statement by the head of the host laboratory that the planned research can be carried out at the laboratory.
- Copies of Abitur and all academic certificates with grades.
- Ungraded academic degree certificates are not sufficient.
- Certificates can be submitted in English or German. Certificates in other languages have to be submitted in English translation (translated by a certified translator).
- It is not necessary to submit certified copies.
- If the grading is different from the German grading system (1 to 6), a grading key has to be included. If the degree certificates do not permit the evaluation of the applicant´s accomplishments, the application cannot be processed.
- If the applicant is about to graduate shortly after the application deadline, the application can be submitted without the graduation certificate (please include note). The certificate or a statement of final grades have to be submitted within 6 weeks of the application deadline.
Additional information
- In the case of illness, the Ernst Schering Foundation continues its fellowship payments for 2 months. After that time the payments will cease until the fellow restarts his or her work. Upon recovery, the fellowship may be extended by the whole period of absence due to the illness.
- Projects in botany and dentistry or projects with the goal of carrying out clinical studies are unsupported.
- Fellowships are awarded irrespective of the applicant´s nationality and the country where the project will be pursued.
- The dissertation project can be carried out at a university or institute of the applicant´s choice.
