Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting.

The Fashion Studies Department of Columbia College Chicago seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Fashion Design beginning August 16, 2012.

Applicants must have expertise in fashion design practice and teaching experience in the studio learning environment. Candidates must engage in innovative teaching practices and have the skill to inspire students’ understanding of fashion theory and practice. The preferred candidate will possess a progressive awareness of the current and rapidly changing global position of fashion design and the fashion design industry. Ideally, the candidate’s own work will reflect a strong practice that may include but is not limited to one or more of the following areas of specialty: technical expertise in patternmaking, draping techniques and/or garment construction; technical facility with CAD fashion software; application of Adobe CS in studio and portfolio development.

With this hire, the Fashion Studies Department, which is part of the School of Fine and Performing Arts, is seeking to strengthen its academic programs. The faculty we hire will help the department expand current and future undergraduate curriculum by embracing new forms of critically engaged disciplinary and trans-disciplinary practice. The Fashion Studies Department currently offers three degree options for students: the BFA in Fashion Design, the BA in Fashion Design, and the BA in Fashion Business. As a newly formed department, established in 2010, Fashion Studies is seeking visionary faculty interested in building new curriculum and fostering an inspiring learning environment for students interested in fashion design. In this exciting period, the department is redesigning its curriculum to encourage students to reflect on the expanding field of fashion and the issues they confront as young designers. The department is committed to offering students the opportunities to engage in project-based learning in the studio, in Chicago, and beyond.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teaching 3 courses per semester.
  • Advising students.
  • Participating in curriculum development and committee service at the department and college level.
  • Continual research and professional development in his/her field.

Qualifications:

  • An MFA in Fashion Design or equivalent experience in the fashion industry.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of teaching experience at the college level preferred.
  • Ability to unite industry standards with fashion design coursework.
  • Commitment to teaching and scholarship.
  • Expertise in fashion design practice, theory and history.
  • Ability to teach and advise all levels of undergraduate students.
