Why DoD SMART Scholarship?

SMART is a DoD civilian scholarship-for-service programme that is part of the National Defense Education Program (NDEP) and is funded by the Secretary of Defense’s Office. Hence, the program’s goal is to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers who work at DoD facilities. Also, the DoD SMART scholarship provides tuition and grants to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students who have demonstrated an aptitude for excelling in STEM fields relevant to the DoD.

DoD STEM aims to attract, inspire, and develop exceptional STEM talent across the educational continuum, as well as to advance the current DoD STEM workforce to meet future defence technological challenges. So, the Department of Defense recognizes the importance of assisting young American scientists and engineers in their education.

Further, The SMART Scholarship Program is an important component of the Department of Defense’s investment in attracting the best hands and brightest minds with technical expertise to help the Department carry out its mission. The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is part of the Department of Defense’s concerted effort to increase the flow of new, highly skilled technical labour into DoD facilities and agencies while also improving the technical skills of the existing workforce.
