How to Write a CV for Job Application? | Useful Tips

Today, we’ll go over some helpful tips for creating an effective CV, particularly for academic purposes. Always begin by providing your personal information, such as your name, contact information, nationality, and gender. Make your CV as easy to read as possible. Larger font sizes make reading difficult and distracting. Make a brief summary of yourself (Recommended). Include your most significant accomplishments here. You can also add your expertise. (Related to the job you’re applying for.)

Mention your previous experiences here, beginning with the most recent. Make certain that everything you write is relevant to the scholarship programme for which you are applying. Also, don’t go into too much detail about your previous experience. If you lack professional experience, you can include information about your internships in this section. Make three to four bullet points. Also, explain if you have supervised a group of people (to demonstrate that you are a team player), how your contributions have impacted the organisation, and any accolades you have received.

Educational Details

Start with the most recent study and work your way back. When entering your grades, always include the highest possible grade/CGPA. This allows them to rank you higher. However, if your CGPA is low, you should skip that section. Instead, add a bullet point stating that you are among the top 5 or top 10 students in your class.

Professional Experience

In this section, list all of your relevant education and training. You can also include an additional information section in which you can describe the conferences, certificates, and presentations you have given. Make a point of writing only those that are relevant to the scholarship programme for which you are applying. Don’t overwhelm them with information that isn’t relevant to the scholarship committee.

You can also put your IELTS test score at the bottom, with individual bands for each module, because they sometimes need to see individual results. Keep in mind that the reader’s first impression will be based on the presentation. If you don’t have anything to sell, you can present your two, four, or six years of education in such a way that the reader is impressed. And if you have nothing to say, take 6 months to get some certificates online, do an internship, and gain some good experience to include in your CV.   1. Always email or share your CV in.pdf format. The MS Word version will look/display differently depending on the user’s version of MS Office.
  2. Always rename your CV with your name, for example, “Resume ABC XYZ.”
  3. Your resume should be no more than one page long. Remove any unnecessary spaces and materials.
  4. Your name appears twice in the address. There is no need for that.
  5. There is no need to provide your full address. Simply mention Address, email, and phone numbers should all be on a single line.
  6. There is no need to mention FSc / matric under education.
  7. Work and professional experience should be combined.
  8. There is no need to explain each organisation. Simply state the name of the organisation, your position there, the time period you worked there, and what you did/achieved while in that position.
