Dekeyser & Friends Foundation: Teaching Project - Fully Funded Fellowship
Description
Have you ever dreamed of making a difference in a child’s life? Live for three months on the Green Chimneys campus in Brewster, New York and experience hands-on the unique Green Chimneys approach to teaching children and adolescents with special needs with the help of animals! Together with your project Friend Dr. Sam Ross, the founder of Green Chimneys, you will not only learn about their work, but also share your experiences and help others understand this special way of helping children in need. Starting end of August 2011 you will spend three months learning about animal assisted therapy for children and adolescents using a variety of pets and farm animals. Green Chimneys offers a multitude of programs ranging from a day school to residential treatment facilities and community outreach programs. In all programs the students are engaged with animals, for example by helping to release injured animals back into the wild, horse grooming and riding, training assistance dogs for people with physical challenges and many other activities.
For students who come from:
- Worldwide
Want to go to:
- United States
Green Chimneys main campus is located in Brewster, a fairly small village about 60 miles north of New York City on the East Coast of the USA. The 200 acres farmland is home to a day school, residential treatment centers as well as the farm and wildlife center. It’s name comes from two actual green chimneys, which had given the farm its nickname even before the Ross family turned it into a school in 1947!
The second Green Chimneys site is the Clearpool Education Center, a former summer camp offering lodging and communal spaces only about 30 minutes away from the Brewster Campus. As a Fellow you will live in a shared house on site of the Clearpool Education Center.

Eligibility
Do you think about the impact your dreams and ideas could have on the society you live in? Are you curious? Would you like to benefit from the exchange with an experienced personality? Are you motivated to engage in a challenging multi-cultural project and be in exchange with young people from all around the world? Are you between 18-28 years old?
Then you should apply! If you are accepted, you will be awarded a Fellowship that covers the tuition costs of the program, transport to and from the project, as well as room and board. Our selection criteria are:
Age
Our projects are for young people between 18 and 28 (21 for US projects). This means that on the first day of the project you must be at least 18 (or 21) years old and no older than 28. If you are younger than 18 (or 21) when you apply you will have to supply a permission sheet by your parent or legal guardians.
Motivation
Dekeyser&Friends projects are for young people from all around the world who are eager to engage with other young people from different cultures and an experienced personality in a goal-oriented project. They are for people with dreams, ideas and hopes and the motivation to think about the future.
Previous Experience
Everyone can apply. The most important thing for us is not what you already know or have done in the past, what universities you have gone to or where you have worked. What really counts is that you show us that you really want to participate and that you want to use the experience for your future development.
Other Requirements
As a Fellow of the Teaching Project you should love kids and animals! You will spend much time outdoors taking care of animals and working with children with special needs so you ideally enjoy nature and are a patient and caring person.
As you will be working directly with children, you will be legally required to pass a criminal background check, as well as submit to fingerprinting and a medical screening that includes a test for tuberculosis. Only Fellows accepted into this project have to pass these tests, you don’t need to worry about them for your application!
