University of Cologne - The a.r.t.e.s. PhD Scholarship: Knowledge and Science in an Intercultural Context

Description of the Scholarship

The Research School a.r.t.e.s. functions as a Graduate School of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne. Its aim is to gain extended knowledge of epistemic processes regarding language, history, culture, mediality, anthropology, and ethics, and to contribute to the understanding of epistemic processes with reference to the complexity of cultural contexts.

The key concepts Anthropology - Reception - Transculturation - Episteme - Sprache (language) which form the acronym a.r.t.e.s., mark the main interdisciplinary emphases and refer to the longue durée of epistemic processes which cannot be neglected in the light of present challenges. As a graduate school, a.r.t.e.s. focuses particularly on the qualification of young talented researchers. For this purpose, the resources and the variety of disciplines at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities are combined to enable a well-structured and time-efficient PhD programme with an interdisciplinary advisory board and with five interdisciplinary classes of the Research School:

Class 1 - Ideas and Epistemic Constellations in Antiquity
Class 2 - Dynamic Networks of Modernity
Class 3 - Communication Cultures: Medialities, Language and Discourse Systems
Class 4 - Knowledge and Science in an Intercultural Context
Class 5 - Life Studies: Human Nature and Culture

a.r.t.e.s. supplements the mentoring specified in the doctorate agreement through cooperation with national and international partners as well as with a special information service and career-oriented support.

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School provides a structured PhD programme with an interdisciplinary approach. The model of individual doctoral studies is combined with a set of guided courses. Supervision is provided through a mentoring programme during a period of three academic years. The first year of the PhD programme is focused on the sharpening of the dissertation topic, which has to be presented in the a.r.t.e.s. Forum. In second year, students focus on research and a.r.t.e.s. Practice (seminars in communication and representation), while the third year will be dedicated to the presentation of results in written form and a co-teaching semester.

Support

a.r.t.e.s. addresses graduates who have completed their studies with outstanding academic results at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and who strive for doctoral studies close to their final examination.

Scholarship holders will be supervised by the class spokesperson and three academic advisers, one of them from another academic discipline.
In the class colloquia during the semester period, scholarship holders periodically report and discuss the progress of their research with their classmates and the class spokesperson. The yearly and comprehensive colloquia of the entire graduate school offer the opportunity to discuss topics and advances in research within the school context together with the academic advisers and the other a.r.t.e.s. scholarship holders.
